Quick answer
A sofa in good condition with its fire label can often be donated or sold. A worn one goes to a council bulky collection or the tip, where upholstered seating is handled separately. If it is upstairs or will not fit in the car in Swindon, a private collection is easier.
Your options at a glanceSection titled Your%20options%20at%20a%20glance
If your sofa or armchair is still sound and has its fire-safety label, donating or selling it is the best route. Otherwise you can book a Swindon Council bulky collection, check with the council about the recycling centre, or arrange a private collection. Council prices and rules change, so recheck the official pages before you book anything.

Why sofas need special handlingSection titled Why%20sofas%20need%20special%20handling
Many sofas and armchairs contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in their flame-retardant treatments. Under the GOV.UK guidance on managing waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs, this waste must be incinerated at an authorised facility, landfill is prohibited, and it must be kept separate from other waste. The rules cover sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, recliners, dining chairs, stools, futons and bean bags.
That separate handling is why sofas are treated differently from other furniture. Swindon Council's bulky waste page says damaged seating must have any tear or exposed filling covered and taped before collection, to stop POPs escaping. A sofa that can be reused is a different matter: GOV.UK's reuse guidance says it must need no more than minor repair and comply with fire safety law, for example by carrying the appropriate labels.

Swindon Council's bulky waste service charges £44.00 for a standard collection (£34.50 if you receive at least 80% Council Tax Support) of up to three qualifying items. Only one item of upholstered seating, such as a sofa or armchair, is collected per standard collection, though up to six small items like dining chairs and stools can count as one. Payment is due when you book and is non-refundable.
Items are not collected from inside your property, garden, garage or shed. Leave them at the boundary where your bins are collected by 6:30am on the collection day. Upholstered seating cannot be swapped for other items once booked, and you can reschedule up to six days before the collection date.

Taking a sofa to the tipSection titled Taking%20a%20sofa%20to%20the%20tip
Swindon's Household Waste Recycling Centre is at Waterside Park, Darby Close, Cheney Manor Industrial Estate, SN2 2PN. You must book a slot in advance, and bookings are checked before vehicles can enter. Vans under 3.5 tonnes and cars with trailers use a separate area where loads are inspected.
The council's page does not list sofas or upholstered seating among accepted items, so do not assume a sofa will be taken. Call the StreetSmart team on 01793 445500 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) before you book a slot.

The British Heart Foundation furniture and electrical store at 27-29 Bridge Street, SN1 1BP, offers a free home collection for unwanted furniture, and you can check whether they can accept your item when booking. Their page does not set out condition rules, so ask the store on 01793 399515.
Under GOV.UK's reuse guidance, a sofa only counts as reusable if it needs no more than minor repair and complies with fire safety law, for example by carrying the appropriate labels. When a charity collects from your home, the item is normally treated as reusable only if the collector checks it before taking it. A sofa that fails the check is waste. If you would rather sell, local online marketplaces work for sofas in good condition, but the same condition and label points apply.
When a private collection makes senseSection titled When%20a%20private%20collection%20makes%20sense
A paid collection is worth considering if the sofa is upstairs, will not fit through the door without dismantling, or nobody can lift it. The council will not collect from inside your property and takes only one upholstered seating item per standard booking, so a private collection suits you better if you have other furniture to go too. Swindon Waste Collection carries the sofa out and disposes of it through the correct licensed route.

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions
Will the council take a sofa in Swindon?Section titled Will%20the%20council%20take%20a%20sofa%20in%20Swindon%3F
Yes. Swindon Council's bulky waste service collects sofas for £44.00, limited to one upholstered seating item per standard collection. Recheck the page before booking, as prices and rules change.
Can a charity collect my sofa?Section titled Can%20a%20charity%20collect%20my%20sofa%3F
Possibly. The British Heart Foundation offers a free home collection for furniture and checks whether they can accept your goods. Under GOV.UK's reuse guidance, a sofa needs to be in good enough condition and comply with fire safety law to count as reusable.
Can I cut a sofa up and put it in the bin?Section titled Can%20I%20cut%20a%20sofa%20up%20and%20put%20it%20in%20the%20bin%3F
No, we would not advise it. GOV.UK guidance says waste upholstered seating containing POPs must be incinerated and kept separate from other waste, and landfill is prohibited. Use a bulky collection, a charity if it is reusable, or a licensed collector instead.
